I made it home last night with no problems. There is certainly more to write, but I haven’t had time yet.
Most of this ride was right along the Mexican border, and passed by another major border crossing. There were a lot of border patrol people in sight, and I passed a couple of check points on the highway.
Like every other security checkpoint I’ve passed on the highway, they seemed pretty useless. You pull up to something that looks like a toll booth, you pull up to one of the tolls, and a bored security guard looks surprised that you’re waiting for him to wave you through. It’s the same treatment for everyone from Semi’s to SUV’s with tinted windows to motorcycles.
Later on, I crossed over the mountains to reach San Diego. It started out as a lot of fun, with beautiful rocky mountain sides, and I nice steep road (I went both up and down about 4000 feet). However, the higher I got, the stronger the wind gusts were, the colder it was, and I started getting ever growing splatters of rain. Fortunately, as the rain grew steady, the wind died down, but the temperature dropped as the sun set. All in all, it was a challenge, but I enjoyed it more than you might think.
As I came down off the mountain, the rain stopped, and I went through San Diego, and into the first really heavy traffic of the ride. I was also going through the first real navigation challenge since the GPS had conked out on me.
Will and Janet feed me a wonderful dinner, after which we logged into Wow and tried my first heroic dungeon. Garrett has kept growing (he’s already one!), and is beautiful baby.
All day long, I listened to a podcast called “X Minus One” which is a 1940′s Sci Fi radio show being retransmitted as a pod cast. It was a blast.
